Caught Red-Pawed in the Act! Jazmine’s Caturday Indiscretion!

JazKiz1

This was Jazmine and Kizmet minutes after they had first met. He loved her from the first moment he laid eyes on her!

Well… this is certainly awkward and embarrassing… for Jazmine. Why? Because she and Kizmet have been BFF’s since the moment Jazmine came into our home back in March of 2014. She was about 6 months old when we got her – Dan and I had gone to the Global Pet Expo in Orlando with the intention of meeting people and learning about pet industry trends, but instead came home with a rescue kitten that was not at all on our radar of things to do!!

Anyhow, Kizmet fell in love with her the instant he laid eyes on her and bequeathed himself her indentured guardian.  She put up a brief hissy fit, but once she realized he was friend, not foe, they become bonded soul-mates and have remained so ever since. Check out the video of the two of them to see what I mean – this was them in the early stages of their relationship:

This is Kizmet and Jazmine in a more recent picture. Wherever Jazmine is, Kizmet is never far behind.

So you can only imagine how dreadful a scene this was when Kizmet came into my office and witnessed this:

I apologize for how brief the video was and how atrociously shot it was, but in a nutshell, it was Jazmine watching a video of Cody from Cat Chat With Caren and Cody. Caren captured Cody pitifully meowing for snacks and Jazmine was thoroughly mesmerized with him!! She was initially sitting on a shelf above my computer and when she heard Cody, she immediately came down to see what the noise was. When she saw him on the screen, she started scratching at the screen and meowing back at him. Here is the video of Cody if you’d like to watch it – thank you to Caren for letting me share it!

That’s when Kizmet entered the room. Uh oh. Busted. He was so upset with Jazmine that he jumped up to my desk to swat at her to get down. And then for good measure, he swatted at the other cats in the room. I had wanted to get a good video clip of Jazmine interacting with Cody – it really was precious – but Kizmet was so agitated that I decided it was best to leave the situation alone.

Oh dear… it looks like Jazmine has some explaining to do…

Kizmet is now sleeping my  bedroom and Jazmine is back up on top of the shelf above my computer. She seems to be quite contrite at the moment and I do hope these two will be able to repair their relationship. I do believe she meant no harm and I am sure deep in her heart, Kizmet still remains her true love.

Cody is quite the irresistible cat, so I can understand her temporary indiscretion. And to be fair, when we had a female house guest, Rose, the cat I found in the road one day and brought home to find her owner (which I did)  Kizmet was pining at the guest bedroom door where she was staying to get in to say hello to her. So there you go, I guess all’s fair in love and war as they say.

Jazmine back up on the shelf… She does appear to be sorry…

All kidding aside, I think what is most fascinating about all of this, is that it shows just how complex animals really are. Something provokes them and they react as best they can to diffuse the situation. The drama made for an entertaining and emotional story for me – a classic lovers spat – but it was really just their instinctual reactions to the stimulus at hand and I knew enough to stop playing Cody’s video because it was clearly agitating Kizmet. And that’s the lesson to this, if you have cats that are lashing out or battling with one another, do make the attempt to understand the environment and the root cause of what’s causing the altercation.

We want our kitties to be as happy as possible in their homes, that’s really the bottom line! Have a great Caturday all – and what about your cats? Have any of them ever expressed emotions around one another because of a video or something else?

This sounds like a classic case of redirected aggression to me. Kizmet reacted to the sounds of Cody on your computer and viewed him as a threat to his territory, and since he couldn’t get at Cody, he took it out on Jazmine and the other cats. I hear about this kind of scenario quite frequently: a cat is meowing or hissing or yowling on TV or the computer, and a fight breaks out between formerly peaceful cats in the household. This can also happen when cats see a strange cat outside the window. And while I agree with you that animals have complex emotions, this appears to be a clear case of an instinctual reaction to a territorial threat rather than Kismet being upset with Jazmine for watching Cody on your computer.

I hope this blows over quickly and their relationship returns to normal!

    • Deb says:

Yes, the logical side of me knows you are quite correct, Ingrid! It’s the romantic in me that witnessed otherwise! Jazmine and Kizmet have such a sweet love story that it was easy for me to project my own human emotions to create a fun post! All is well now – no more Cody video watching!

  2. Angel Ms. Phoebe's Family says:

How sweet Kizmet is so jealous of Cody over Jazmine! I am not surprised as I have always been a defender of animal intelligence and feeling. When Ms. Phoebe was alive she was like many tortie’s, incredibly sweet as long as you did not try to win the affections of her person. Her panther fur sis Černy and she got along good normally, yet if she came in to the room to find me petting or giving my undivided attention/affection to Černy, she would approach, swat at Černy, chase her off and then jump up next to me where her sis had been and demand all the loves for herself. Poor Černy always submitted to her demand and we only cuddled when Pheebs was occupied elsewhere! My current resident tortie Clove is much the same with Pheebs’ and her fur bro Kaspars, so I have to make sure to allot special attention time for him too.
I attribute a lot of this jealousy to my cats being rescues who were abandoned on the streets to fend for themselves, and now that they have a home and love they feel threatened by others they may be replaced or left out. Food is an example of this same fear as Clove still has gorging on food issues due to a fear of not getting enough like she experienced on the street. We are working on this and making progress, but have regression at times. That fear of abandonment is a powerful emotion in both humans and animals, showing our similarities in intelligence and feeling- we are more alike than people give them credit for.

  3. Flynn says:

Oh Jazmine, you heartbreaker! I hope all is roses again by now.

  4. Ellen Pilch says:

That is too funny. Just think of Cody as a movie star and she was just enjoying his film 🙂

  5. OHHHHH MYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY Lenny and I are laughing our heads off (and Cody is QUITE flattered to have received attention, albeit virtual from such a GORGEOUS ladycat), that being said, Cody can see that Kizmet is MUCH larger than he is and would give Cody a run for his money. Plus, Cody is GUD (geographically undesirable) since he lives in Michigan……..so Kizmet has NOTHING to worry about!!!

Oh how this made me LAUGH!!!!! I could watch it over and over!
    xoxoxo

  6. Random Felines says:

We will come over if we hear baby kittens on mom’s kindle.

We know Jasmine will be back in Kismet’s good graces in no time

  7. Connie Marie says:

Personally I agree with your romantic side. Kizmet was jealous of Jazmine watching Cody, he is cute.
Jazmine looks like she’s a big ball sitting there, is her fur fluffed out? She is just so gorgeous, has such an emotional face, I could look at her all day. No offense to my kitties who I do stare at all day. Not that I’m immobile, they’re all helping me!! I get lots done too. lol

  8. Brian says:

It will be okay Kizmet, really pal. Cody has that affect on the ladies!

  9. That’s it Jazmine. Keep those boys on their toes. #yougogirl

  10. That is absolutely *fantastic*!!!

  11. Don’t worry Kismet! We know Jazzmine’s heart really belongs to you. She was only looking. 😉

  12. MOL! You’re in trouuuuuuubbbblllllle !!!

(and yes, we minimize those type of sounds for agitation reasons as well!)

  13. Deziz World says:

Weez boff purretty good natured. But we kinda half to be since we be Service cats and go into da public wiff mommy. So we don’t usually act out towards each other cuz of sumfin’ we see or hear. We have on occasion told mommy no more kitties when she’s cooin’ over da babies in videos. MOL We sure hope everypawdy calms back down and makes up soon.

    Luv ya’

    Dezi and Lexi

  14. Kitties Blue says:

Whenever I play a video on the computer and any type of animal is making noise, whoever is nearby has to check it out. Never had any jealousy or problems though. That shelf over your desk is the best cat perch! I just use my laptop at the kitchen counter, so I always have to contend with cats sitting or standing on my keyboard. Hope everything settles down and Kizmet and Jazmine are already BFFs again. Hugs, Janet

  15. Noodle says:

Sounds like everybody has gone to their respective corners for the time being.
    Have a super Sunday…

Well, Cody IS quite the suave and debonair dude. Paws crossed that all is back to normal for Jazmine and Kizmet real soon. 🙂

  18. This is so funny! Jazmine, you’ve got some ‘splaining to do!

  19. We have the same trouble when we play naimal or cat videos. Someone always comes up and wants to know where the ‘animal’ is hiding!

  20. CATachresis says:

Wow!! I always knew kitty relationships were more complex than we thought!! How very sweet they are together though! I recently was watching a video clip of Katie Isabella having a manipedi and her pitiful crying really upset Austin! I thought he was going to get inside the device and go to her rescue!!!
