Living in a Multi-cat Household – My Interview with Gina Boekhout of “Cats the Boss”

I can’t claim to be an expert on everything, for example, ask me about golf, cars, astronomy, and trigonometry and you will get a polite, but blank stare from me. Cats, however, is a different story all together and while I don’t have a fancy degree to back up my findings, I do have over 30 years of multi-cat household experience. I kind of feel I have earned my stripes to at least act as a quasi-expert and that is why I was thrilled when Gina Boekhout and her Tortie, Jessie, of the blog “Cat the Boss,” asked me to guest post about what it is like to live in a multi-cat household.

Are there challenges? Absolutely. Are they worth it? Equally absolutely.  For those of you that might be considering the jump from single to multi-cat ownership, this is a must read for you. If you already are part of a multi-cat home, please stop by to say hello and offer your own words of wisdom and advice.  Gina and Jessie are one of the newest additions to the cat blogosphere and would love to hear from you!

Smile For The Camera…

Editors Note: When I wrote this post for a scheduled Saturday publish date, I had no idea I actually might be smiling for a camera… a camera by TV crews at a protest rally on behalf of the Loews cats who have been cruelly and inhumanely trapped from hotel premises these past couple of weeks. As I write this, I don’t know what the outcome will be, but I, along with the other devoted cat advocates who were able to take the trip to Orlando to take a stand against David Bartek and his cold-hearted actions, I pray we can make a difference for these cats. I thank all of you amazing people across the nation and the world for the overwhelming support you have given us to help spread the word against this travesty of animal rights. I will update you with details later, in the meantime, keep us and the cats in your thoughts today... Now, on to today’s scheduled post!

Remember when you had to hold film negatives up to a window to figure out what image number it was that you wanted to get re-printed? Nowadays you can access photo images in a split second on your phone or computer and print them instantly… Or email them… or post them on social media networks…

There is no doubt that I love my cats. I literally have THOUSANDS of pictures to prove that thanks to the talents of Dan and I am more than happy to share them all day long like the proud kitty parent I am. With digital photography now part of our mainstream life, we no longer have to wait for a roll of film to be finished to either drop off at our local pharmacy (which, by the way, back then, there was only one per town and not the mandatory CVS or Walgreen’s you find on EVERY street corner), a Photo mat, or in the mail in a prepaid envelope from York or some other company like that to have them developed and mailed back to you.  Some of these processes could literally take well over a week, and then you had to deal with the high probability that your film got mixed up with someone else’s and you have to prove that the picture of some strange guy in ladies underwear is not really your husband…. Okay, that never really happened, but you get the picture, so to speak…    Read more

Cats, Crocheting, and Computers – The New Neighborhood of my Life

As with anyone in my generation, I grew up playing outside in my neighborhood until I was called in from the distance by my Mother for supper. We were probably playing some sort of game that involved nothing more than a simple ball, but my siblings and I were completely engrossed in whatever game we had invented for the day. This is not the world our current generation lives in and I can’t judge them for their seeming obsession with television, computers, video games, and cell phones, because that is how they are growing up and that is their reality. Tell them to go outside and play with a ball for hours and you are certain to get that teenage glare of utter exasperation at the stupidity of your suggestion.

A vast sea of cell phones that become more obsolete with each passing second...

I recall my teenage moment when I rolled my eyes into the back of my head when my grandfather told me about walking a mile to school without shoes in the winter. I also recall getting “the look” from my oldest son when I told him when I grew up, we did not have a microwave. The look implied, first of all, “who cares,” and secondly, “I can’t relate.” Whatever… Read more
