Living in a Multi-cat Household – My Interview with Gina Boekhout of “Cats the Boss”

I can’t claim to be an expert on everything, for example, ask me about golf, cars, astronomy, and trigonometry and you will get a polite, but blank stare from me. Cats, however, is a different story all together and while I don’t have a fancy degree to back up my findings, I do have over 30 years of multi-cat household experience. I kind of feel I have earned my stripes to at least act as a quasi-expert and that is why I was thrilled when Gina Boekhout and her Tortie, Jessie, of the blog “Cat the Boss,” asked me to guest post about what it is like to live in a multi-cat household.

Are there challenges? Absolutely. Are they worth it? Equally absolutely.  For those of you that might be considering the jump from single to multi-cat ownership, this is a must read for you. If you already are part of a multi-cat home, please stop by to say hello and offer your own words of wisdom and advice.  Gina and Jessie are one of the newest additions to the cat blogosphere and would love to hear from you!

  1. Maxwell: in our humble opinions, multi-cat households ROCK.
Allie: good thing it was YOU that used the word humble, Max. Faraday could never get away with it!

    • Deb says:

MOL…Maxwell -you, Allie, and Faraday all rock!! If your house is anything like ours (and I think it is), I can only imagine the fun you guys have everyday hanging out together!! We love our multi-cat world and would not have it any other way!!

  2. Carolyn says:

As you know Austin is an only cat (except for Tigger who is thorn in his flesh if the truth be told) but I do understand the attraction of the multi cat household, if nothing else for the entertainment (and maybe the poop!) Will pop over …..

    • Deb says:

Carolyn – the entertainment factor alone is worth the price of admission, but I had never thought of the poop angle… If poop is what you’re looking for, than rest assured, it is a commodity that seems to replinish with astonishing frequency… If only I could have a nickel for every time I picked up that pooper-scooper… I would be as wealthy as Donald Trump in about a week!!

  3. RumpyDog! says:

Cool beans! I’m heading over now!

  4. There are only 2 of us, but before mum got us she had 11 cats. One was her own and the other 10 she took on when her MIL died. She got us when there was only one of the eleven left who was Kitty Yumbum. Kitty YB was pining so she got us to keep her company. She figured if she got two of us, then we wouldn’t drive Kitty YB nuts because we would have each other to go crazy with. It worked out well and she lived for another two happy years and doted on us.

    • Deb says:

That’s a great story Eric and Flynn! Thank you for sharing and I am glad that you got to enjoy the company of YB for two years -she sounds like she was a very sweet cat! Cats really can get lonely. We got Zoey as a playmate for Zee – he was a young cat full of energy and the older cats, Harley and Jazz, just did not want to play with him. Zoey was exactly what he needed and he fell head over paws in love with her the moment we brought her into the house!
