In the roller coaster journey of writing Purr Prints of the Heart – A Cat’s Tale of Life, Death, and Beyond, a meow-memoir written in the voice of my dearly departed Ragdoll cat, Mr. Jazz, who I had to help cross over the Bridge on August 28, 2013, after 15 years of life, it turns out writing the book was the easy part. Kittens. In my day, it was not uncommon to see a kid holding a box with a litter of them that read, “Free to a good home.” It was also not uncommon to see free kittens advertised in the classified section of the newspaper. And if you were going to the mall, a side trip to the pet store to visit with the kittens (and puppies) was always in order even if you had no plans to buy one. None of these scenarios came with baggage attached as to whether or not there was a larger implication at hand with all of these animals at the ready. Read more

There is no doubt that cats experience the five senses – sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste in a much more heightened level than humans do. Using every part of their body to communicate and survive – eyes, ears, whiskers, mouth, nose, tail, and paws, they navigate through life with incredible prowess and skill. I believe as well they have a sixth sense that enables them to be intuitive above and beyond those senses, giving them a complex level of understanding far beyond what appears on the surface. I came across a post on Facebook the other day from The Paw Project, an organization based in California that is devoted to educating the public about the painful and crippling effects of declawing on cats and is working to create legislation to abolish the procedure in the United States. In this post they indicated that pet loving mogul, Martha Stewart, advocated declawing on her Sirius XM Martha Stewart Live radio segment that aired on May 5th, 2014. They politely asked people to help educate Martha by tweeting the following message to her: @MarthaStewart – Declawing cats is NOT humane – it is outlawed in 30+ countries for animal cruelty.
