The Sleeping Bag

I don’t know where it came from, but I do know that I loved it from the moment I saw it.

Out of nowhere, it suddenly appeared on the big couch- a large pouch-like device that’s long and green on the outside, orange/yellow and well worn on the inside.  The inside is also comprised of very soft warm cloth, while the green part is smooth like satin.  If unraveled entirely this cloth piece could cover the whole couch, but usually it’s bundled up (or rolled up) and stashed at one edge, near the arm.  Possibly it’s strangest feature is the metal zipper that extends from the top edge of the green side all the way to the opposing bottom edge.  This zipper appears to me to be useless, since I can always crawl in or out through the unzipped part, so I presume that it’s there for decoration.  In that aspect it’s kind of nice.

Humans call this green cloth device a sleeping bag.  (That’s what I call it now, too!) At first glance, it might not look very comfortable.  This bag is well worn, and OLD.  I examined it very carefully before I decided to try to make use of it’s presence.  It was very soft, and had the scent of my human roommate Sean on it (he smells very nice, btw).  I circled the bag, examined it, and eventually decided to try standing on it.  As I sank my claws into the satin-like cloth, I somehow pulled the bag down off the couch and onto my head.  Sean had to use his arms and hands to pick up the sleeping bag and re-position it for me on the couch.  In doing so he inadvertently revealed the bag’s secret of comfort.

I saw my opening, and I went for it.  Aaahhhhhhh… inside was where the useful comfort was, not on the outside.  Tremendous discovery by me.  Soft and warm, with the option to knead my claws deep into the cloth if I so desire.

A cat must have invented this sleeping bag.  It’s perfect for cat-napping.

I nap almost every day in the sleeping bag.  Sometimes I use it for short naps, but it seems to be much better suited for the longer type.  Some evenings I crawl into it after dinner around six, and sleep all the way through to ten or eleven o’clock.  I arise with tons of energy, ready to play with or without (but usually with) the humans.

For humans, a sleeping bag seems like it would be fairly useless.  They’d have to slide into it the long way, and then either their head or their feet would remain uncovered, sticking out the open end.  That’s no way to sleep.  BUT for a cat, a sleeping bag is the perfect addition to any couch.

What perfect timing you have for sharing this with us Zeuss, when the temperatures in South Florida have actually hit the low 30’s! Creature comforts for sure! As always, a wonderfully written and enjoyable post.
