Recycling Projects to Help Shelter Cats for Earth Day!

Living each day with the intention of respecting the earth will make it a better place.

Look at the world though the wonderment of a cat’s perspective. It’s an awe-inspiring beautiful place that we should be thankful for each and every day.

Our earth is a beautiful entity that sustains our very being – it’s a precious gift to live in such an incredible world and I feel the same about cats that grace this earth – they are a precious gift that bring joy, love, and companionship into our lives. So for Earth Day, I thought it would be appropriate to share some ways that we can recycle stuff to make practical things for not just our own cats, but cats in shelters that could use our love and support.

One of the best ideas I found was using old sweaters and sweatshirts to make cat beds! I know my gang love to sleep on my clothes – chances are yours do too – so why not make a cat bed out of something you no longer wear! Or better yet, why not make several and donate them to a local shelter? You can also make cat baskets and mats out of old t-shirts or sheets by cutting them into strips and creating yarn to crochet with. The fabric is already nice and soft and they would be perfect to put in shelter cages to make kitty feel more comfortable. I’ve included a couple videos I found on YouTube to get you started!

Another great DIY idea is making scratching pads for cats out of old boxes. I found a cool site called Design Sponge – all you have to do is find some old boxes that you probably already have in your garage or a spare room. Cut them into 4” strips and fashion them together into a tight circle to make the scratching pad (please click here for full details).

Save old boxes and turn them into scratching pads for your cat is a great way to recycle for Earth Day

Step one to make a scratching pad from old boxes – find a box. Step two – remove cat from box (good luck with that one says Peanut).

If you’re not feeling crafty, consider donating slightly used towels, blankets and washcloths. Shelters are always in need of these items, as well as old newspapers and plastic bags. If you have cat toys your cat does not play with, donate those. Even things that are not cat related, such as office supplies are helpful to a shelter. Think about it – it’s spring time – so why not make the best use out of spring cleaning and see what extra items you have lying around your house that a shelter could use!

That’s just a fraction of what we can do for cats and help save the earth at the same time. Think small, think big, just think! We have but one earth – love it, cherish it, and protect it! Maybe we can’t save the world in one day, but if we each practice better behavior – using less water, recycling and reusing, and treating our world with respect – when it’s collectively added up, it does make a big difference.

Leaving the water running while doing the dishes and brushing teeth can be very wasteful.

Every time you turn the water on, just picture Jazmine and remember her wise words to try and conserve this extremely precious resource as much as possible. For many of us, we take water for granted, but for many others across the world (and even in our own country), water is a scarce commodity.

Now it’s your turn – please share some of the ways you recycle items to take care of cats and the earth!

The earth is a beautiful place - enjoy it and respect it along the way!

Nothing wrong with exploring our earth, just remember to appreciate, respect, treasure, and honor it along the way! Thank you to Rolz for sharing this important message!
