My Dedication and Promise to Petfinder.com – I am a Cat Parent and Proud of it!
Much as it is hard for me to imagine, not all people like cats or the people who love them and Petfinder.com is trying to change that negative mindset with a campaign whereby cat parents proudly show the world just how real, funny, down-to-earth, inventive and diverse they are. They ask us to proclaim “I am a cat parent” through pictures, blog posts, tweets, or any other way we can think of to prove that everyone can love a cat like we do and that they are not second class pets.
As someone who has always had cats in her life and is currently a cat parent to eight extraordinary felines – Jazz, Harley, Zee, Zoey, Mia, Peanut, Rolz, and Kizmet – my question is how could anyone not want to be a cat parent? Simply put, cats are amazing and I would not want to ever imagine a day in my life without them being a part of it.
Why such devotion and commitment to cats? The fact is very simple – I admire everything about what a cat embodies and my life is completely enriched and fulfilled by them being in it. They are a blessedly unique creature and there is no road map to their logic. A cat believes in magic and is mystical, mysterious, graceful, powerful, elegant, and poetic. They can also be wonderfully goofy, comical, and clumsy clods. Some are perennially active, alert, and curious, while others are at the completely opposite end of the spectrum – they are decidedly lazy and sedentary. But, regardless, each cat has the innate sensibilities and capabilities for love without judgment.Never once do they care if we have combed our hair, cleaned the house, put on makeup, or if our socks match. They don’t care what religion we believe in and they do not judge us for the color of our skin or the income we have. A fancy degree framed on our wall means nothing to them – they don’t care if you are a cashier by profession or a renowned surgeon. It does not matter what language you speak and they don’t care if you live in a mansion or a small apartment. They are not obsessed with the latest celebrity gossip, nor do they care if you like them on facebook. They don’t even care if you wear clean underwear when you leave the house, whether you floss or not, or if you eat a balanced meal and drink eight glasses of water a day.
All they want is to love you and to have you love them back. As long as a cat has its basic needs – food, clean litter, a warm place to sleep, and feels content and secure, then every day has the delightful possibility of being Christmas morning or a wonderful magic carpet ride of chasing unicorns on sunbeams and rainbows in the sky to them. Every toe can become a mouse, every curtain a mountain to be climbed, every paper bag an invitation to a world unknown, and every empty box a castle. Lizards are dragons to be slayed and human laps are the treasured treat of sweet dreams. These individually unique, beautiful and intelligent creatures teach us to live in the moment, to forgive and forget, and to welcome the prospect of a new and better life each and every day, if we so chose. So again, I ask you, after reading that, the real question is why would you not want to be a cat parent?
The text about why I have such a devotion and commitment to cats is an excerpt and one of my favorite parts of The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey. I wrote it as part of the last chapter with the hope that after people read my book that they would have a better love and appreciation for the feline species. I remain dedicated to this commitment and will always be proud to say, “I am a cat parent.”

I was looking for a “like” button, but didn’t see one. Your essay about being a cat parent is so true. Cats are amazing creatures.
I could not agree more about cats being amazing creatures, Beverly! Thank you for stopping by today!
A few have left a bad taste in folks’ mouths, but most of us are just like anyone else, except for the fur on their pants legs.
Hmmm… yeah… the fur. All I can say Rumpy, is that I shed hair too, so who am I to complain about cat hair on my pant legs!!!
How true! Thank you for writing this!
You are very welcome, Brooke!
soooooooo beautifully stated and the photos are exquisite.
I have been super sick since last Thursday….haven’t had a chance to write my post yet………not sure that I will, might have to miss this one, we will see.
Thank you Caren. Sure hope you get better soon – this sickness is really sticking around a long time. I certainly can vouch for you being a fantastic cat parent!! xoxoxo
Your essay about being a cat parent is so true , say´s my mom-person !!
XOXO
We are glad you and your mom-person liked the post, Kjelle!! xoxo
Mommy thinks you have the best and most thought-provoking kitty blog on the internet. She is so super proud to be a cat parent and to have many friends that are ones as well. She and all of us also love the photos of all your felines. The one of Zoey, Harley and Mia gets 32 paws up. Three of us would never all look at the camera at the same time. Purrs and hugs, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette
Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Josette – you and your Mommy are just so sweet for your kind words and I really appreciate the compliment!!
I am super proud to consider your Mommy as one of my cat parent friends and I also LOVE that picture of Zoey, Harley, and Mia!! 🙂
As the proud cat-mom of six, I agree wholeheartedly! Cats are cool, or as they say in the Disney movie “Everybody Wants to be a Cat!”
I love it, Vicki!! No arguing that, cats ARE cool!!
meowloz guys; may we quote:
How we behave toward cats here below, determines our status in heaven. – Robert A. Heinlein

“Beware of people who dislike cats.” – Irish proverb 🙂
Those sure are some great quotes, da tabbie o trout towne!! Thank you for sharing!
Amazing post Deb. Well said. I have always had kitties in my life. I could not imagine life without them.
Thank you so much, Sue. I sure can’t imagine life without them either, and thankfully I don’t have too!
Well, of course you know that I agree with every word. Who wouldn’t love cats? A curmudgeon that I would not give the time of day to, that’s who!! I do not trust those who disparage cats because clearly, there is something wrong with their brain and heart!!
MOL Julia… how do you really feel!??
I love your heart Deb…..you love with all of it. I know eight lucky kitties! ♥
Wonderful post….as always!
Aww… thank you Toni – such a sweet thing to say. When I was a child, I was frail, shy, and emotionally damaged. Cats were my foundation and their companionship got me through a lot. They continue to keep me centered and I cannot help but love them with every bit of my heart!!
I love this campaign and your post. Cats make everything better.
It is a great campaign, Layla – I hope the message gets shared far and wide!
Wait…y’mean there are peoples who don’t like cats?? We don’t believe it! 😉
I know, Island Cats… crazy, huh!?
hmmm…my Mom never dated a man who did not like or have cats. She said the men with cats were able to feel no threat from an independent woman like she always has been…still is…just ask Dad (he had two cats when they met!). I, purrsonally, don’t understand when someone says “I hate cats” and then admit they have never had one. My Mom and Dad are very proud cat parents and I will do a post like you did Miss Deb to show their devotion as cat pawrents. paw pats, Savannah
I agree with you, Savannah. It is very odd when someone claims they don’t like cats and admit they never had one!! I actually was able to convert one such of those people and now she can’t believe how complete her life has become by having a cat in it!! My Dan loves cats as much as I do, and now that I think about it, I am quite an independent person myself!!
I LOVE my cats! Thanks for sharing yours!
We love your cats too, Penelope!!!
Such a beautiful tribute to cats 🙂
Thank you Linda! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
We agree, wholeheartedly! Who *wouldn’t* want to be a cat parent? 🙂
You are GREAT cat parents, meowmeowmans!!!
Austin: *looking at me very severely* “Now why can’t you write something like that?”
Very eloquently said, Deb!
MOL… Austin, you be a good boy… your human has a wonderful sense of writing style!!!
