#RememberTheRescue for Remember Me Thursday
Today is Remember Me Thursday™ – a global social event created to spread awareness on the beauty of pet adoption, to shine a light on all orphan pets still waiting in shelters for a home, and to honor the lost pets who ran out of time before they could find their forever home. The special day was created by Michael Arms, the President of the Helen Woodward Animal Center, in 2013.
Arms wanted an event to honor all the compassionate and dedicated people working in animal welfare who are forced to take the lives of the pets they love. He felt that by lighting a candle for those orphan pets, it would be a way for people to let the world know how much they loved them, that they weren’t forgotten, and that the awareness could help in increasing pet adoptions.
Uniting people worldwide, the campaign encourages individuals to light a candle (literally or virtually) and to opt to adopt, reducing the millions of orphan pets euthanized each year. To be part of the movement, it’s easy. Just visit the Remember Me Thursday™ site for more information. You’ll find out how to light your own candle, and you can also share the event by tweeting, posting, and using the hashtag, #RememberTheRescue.
There will also be numerous animal loving celebrities, behaviorists, athletes, and well-known animal personalities who will come together to light candles, acting as luminaries to lend their voices for the event, including Pauley Perrette, official spokesperson, as well as Beth Stern, Carrie Ann Inaba, Dr. Marty Becker, Diane Keaton, Eric Roberts, Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed, Jackson Galaxy, Katherine Heigl, Kathy Najimy, Wynonna Judd, Cole and Marmalade, and Lil BUB to name just a few.
It’s not something we like to think about, but literally thousands of precious animals will be euthanized across the world in the brief amount of time it takes you to read this post. It’s heartbreaking and very difficult for those of us that love animals to comprehend, but the fact is, it happens. If you have a rescue story, please be sure to participate in the #RememberTheRescue and #RememberMeThursday challenge to help your favorite pet rescue or shelter. I know for me, my rescues, Jazmine and Kizmet light up my life. What rescue pets lights up yours?
I had the pleasure of interviewing two of the celebrity luminaries in years past. I interviewed actor Eric Roberts in 2104, and I interviewed author and star of Animal Planet’s My Cat From Hell, Jackson Galaxy, in 2012. To read the interviews, please visit here:

Jackson Galaxy (an interview with him when My Cat From Hell was launching Season 2, and before he was the bestselling author of today).
All of M and D’s pets were rescues except for their Schnauzer doggie. At the time they adopted him a hundred years ago, purebreds were not very available at shelters. It was their one and only doggie and one and only animal that was not a shelter rescue.
Kudos to the Helen Woodward Center

That so many cats never have homes makes me so sad. Bear was homeless when we met. Over the last 10 years, he’s saved my life every single day … I can’t imagine my life without him. And yet, when I found him, most people would’ve considered him a nuisance and unwanted. Every life matters … EVERY SINGLE ONE. For each cat that is killed because there isn’t a home, we lose out on that potential … the potential to make the world and humanity better.
We purr for all those still sitting in shelters waiting to find their forever homes and all of those that sadly never made it out. 🙁
My family, on both sides, going back to the beginning of time as far as I know, have always loved, rescued, and adopted cats. I carry on that tradition, of course! Our most recent addition to the family is 9 and he was adopted from a family because someone had severe allergies. Additionally, I work 365 days a year online advocating for, crossposting and sharing cats needing loving forever homes, mostly from the NYACC but also from other locations and situations. There isn’t a moment in my life when I do not remember the rescues and strive toward the day when every cat and kitten has the loving forever home (s)he so deserves.
Really enjoyed the Eric Roberts article, btw! I don’t follow domestic pop culture at all, so I had no idea he was so active for cats. Wonderful! And of course it goes without saying that Jackson Galaxy is one of my heroes and great inspirations.

Today is such an important day. I came from a kill shelter, and it was scary. Lexy was in a no kill shelter. Lucky for her because she was there almost a year. We’re also remembering all of the pets who never found a home.
Excellent post. Several of my kitties were from shelters, 2 were in there for 2 years.
We pray for a world where these posts will no longer be necessary xoxoxo
What an excellent and important post. All of our cats have been older. Gracie and Zoe are bonded sisters, all black and were seniors when we adopted them. They had been at the shelter for more than two years!
