Zee Shares a Gift of Love

Maine Coon cats are the gentle giants

My Zee is the epitome of a Maine Coon cat – he’s loving, loyal, and intelligent.

I love Zee. He’s such a sweet, gentle, and kind cat and he demonstrates his love back to me each and every day. He talks to me with his extensive meow vocabulary, he follows me around like a loyal puppy dog, and he patiently waits for me to get up off the couch at night to go to bed so he can cuddle next to me before he eventually settles in to sleep next to my head for the rest of the night. He also brings me gifts at various times of the day, such as stuffed toys dropped at my feet to show his love. But what he did this past Tuesday was so touching, thoughtful, and heartfelt it brought me to tears.

When I leave work at the end of the day, I’ve already had my fill of stress and I just want to be home. But before that can happen, I have to drive in bumper-to-bumper, snail’s pace, rush hour traffic. Needless to say, by the time I get home, I’m even more stressed out and I’m not a happy camper. The first thing I do when I get in the door, besides tripping over seven hungry cats waiting for me to feed them, is walk to my office to drop off my purse. I’ve done it hundreds of times and it’s never been anything to write about. But on this particular day, something caught my eye – I glanced at my desk and saw a stuffed toy sitting on top of the keyboard.

And mind you, this wasn’t just any stuffed toy. This was a leopard-print toy that I had made by hand in a heart shape for Zee many years ago because he’s a cat that loves, loves, loves plush toys. But before I made any assumptions, I called Dan into my office to ask if he had picked the toy up off the floor and put it on the computer. Zee has a tendency to drop his favorite stuffed toys all over the house, so I thought maybe Dan had just found it and put it there. Nope. He did not.

One simple gesture, one giant act of love.

And that’s when I burst into tears. My sweet boy had deliberately brought this toy into my office while I was at work and placed it on top of my keyboard. I think it was his way of letting me know he missed me and wanted me home. He associates me with the computer, so by putting the toy there, he figured it would somehow cause me to materialize. I’m no scientist or behaviorist, but I know what I know. Animals can communicate and that’s exactly what he was doing with me – his little way of letting me know he loves me.

What about you all? Has anything like that ever happened with you and one of your cats?

  1. What a sweet gesture! Newton brings his favorite unstuffed mouse onto the bed every night and leaves it next to me even though that’s not where he sleeps. Ashton won’t let him sleep there, but he brings it to me anyhow. Cats bring gifts in the funniest ways.

That is amazing and sweet. What an incredible connection you and Zee have, Deb! It sounds much like the one I had with Moosey, and with Graphite before him. Hugs.

  3. That’s a very special, deep bond you and Zee have. Granny and I have that too, but I never brought her anything directly on the computer 😀 Pawkisses for a wonderful week ahead 🙂 <3

  5. Aww, that’s so sweet of Zee!

  6. that is just the sweetest EVER!!

  7. Hi Deb,
What a beautiful gesture that Zee did for you! He is very special indeed. But of course YOU are special and he knows this. Not every pet parent would ‘see’ what Zee did and does for you Deb…many humans are oblivious unfortunately. Mommy Jenny counts it a great blessing to be able to know the soul of an animal intimately.
I am Mommy’s heart and soulmate dog and I know always when her spirit is disquieted. I will instantly climb up on top of her chest and lay down, nuzzling up against her to comfort her during these times. I know it’s different from cats, but it’s very special.
Also, my new sister Jellie, who is only 6 lbs, likes to bring tiny toys that she finds around our house up to Mommy and “share” it with her. Mommy thinks it is so sweet and special! Jellie also seems to know instantly when Mommy, Auntie or Grammy are upset…she will walk right up to whomever is distraught, give them a gentle kiss and then curl her tiny body up in their arms or lap. We are endorphin emitting little lovers.
I hope you have a wonderful week and that Zee surprises you with more gestures of love.
    I love you!! Pixel

  8. Yep. Totally believe it. Bear leaves me his favorite toys … usually on my pillow … but sometimes outside the bathroom door when I get a shower. Gets me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. And I always take a picture. Most people would never understand the big deal I make out of these incidents – but I know EXACTLY what my boy is trying to tell me and I don’t take a day with him for granted 🙂
