Mews-Worthy Mention: GPS Locator Device Marketed Towards Pet Owners
While our humans don’t allow Zoey or I or the other kitties of our house to be outdoor cats, they do take us out on weekend mornings in our fenced backyard for some serious sunning, sniffing, and exploring. Even though we are supervised, we still really appreciate that our humans do this for us and we just want to meow “Thank You” to them because we know it kind of wears them out watching all seven of us.
Some kitties are allowed to be outdoor cats though. We know that because of all the visitors we get in our yard that come to peek in our windows to say “hello” to us. This post is for those kitties and for the other outdoor kitties that we have not met yet, that we want to be safe and sound. And even though we are not really fans of dogs, we think this post would be good for them too. We don’t know if this gadget is available nationwide – we know for sure it is something that is being tested locally in South Florida – but we give the concept 5 out of 5 paws and think it is really Mews-Worthy!
AT&T will be selling a new GPS-locator device marketed toward pet owners – allowing them to follow their dogs, cats or other non-human loved ones via a computer or smart phone. According to this article in the Sun Sentinel, “The device called the Garmin GTU 10 is being touted as ideal for tracking pets and property via the Web-based Garmin Tracker service, which works with computers, smartphones and compatible Garmin nülink devices. The GTU 10 is a small, lightweight waterproof device and easily attaches to a pet collar. Or attach to a backpack, bicycle, laptop or any other property you want to keep a close eye on.”
The device might seem kind of pricey – $199.00 for the first year and $49.00 each year after for renewal. But the peace of mind and potential safety it offers a pet owner/lover is invaluable. Nothing is scarier than having a pet run off and you can’t find them. You might spend hours walking or driving around your neighborhood wasting valuable time looking for your pet, not knowing where to begin. The tracker shows the pet owner the past 10 locations of the pet per day, and as long as the device is on the pets collar, it could conceivably bring you back to your pet in minutes.

I keep cody indoors too, he shows no interest in venturing out (thank goodness) I have tried taking him outside on a leash but he seems to want no part of the outdoors.
My Bobo was also an indoor cat, but he loved going out on his leash. We had a few scares where he had run out of the door and I couldn’t find him. This would have been great.
I can see the definite benefits of having this for both cats and dogs. Thanks for sharing this important info!
Even though we supervise our cats and they are in a fenced yard, we still keep Zoey on a harness and leash because she can be a handful… but she LOVES it! I find when we put a kitty on a leash, they don’t like it, but somehow they like a harness because it seems to allow them much more freedom. Andyhow, this really is a great idea and I hope it catches on. Thanks for the great feedback Caren and Cody! 🙂
