Happy 5th Birthday to Mia, Peanut, and Rolz!
Really? 5 years have gone by since the day that Zoey woke me up at 5:00 in the morning to let me know she was in labor and wanted me to be with her when she gave birth to four of the most perfectly formed and beautiful kittens I had ever seen. 5 years later, time rife with both good and bad, little Mia, Peanut, and Rolz have been a part of it each and every day and I couldn’t love them more.

Zoey with her kittens literally minutes after they were born. For any of you that want to read more about my special experience I shared with Zoey when she gave birth to her kittens as well as what it was like to help her raise these darling babies, I invite you to check out the book I wrote, “The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey – A Journey of the Extraordinarily Ordinary,” for full details.
So much has happened in those 5 years – Zeuss Catt, one of the four kittens, found his furever home in Boston, Mr. Jazz crossed to the Bridge, and we adopted our newest feline family member – Kizmet. I wrote a book, became a blogger, and participated in my first protest – a coordinated event in Orlando with Alley Cat Allies to save the outdoor Loews cats. I am part of the non-profit, Pawsitively Humane and I was awarded the title of Writer of the Year by Friskies Purina at the Cat Writer’s Conference. All because of a family of kittens that stole my heart and made me a better person.
Five years makes a difference in a cat too. No longer the rambunctious and relatively “hands-off” kittens that they used to be, they have mellowed with age and have become decidedly more affectionate, clingy, and needy with Dan and I. Rolz who used to melt into a pile of liquid if you dared try to pet him now spends his nights tucked in-between Dan and I in bed, nuzzling his head against our hands so we can pet him. He also lies with us at the end of the day when we convene to the couch and is quite content to be a part of the family, rather than watching it from afar like he used to.
Darling Mia who has never known anything but the love, comfort, and security of our home almost seemed semi-feral at one point. She shied away from attention and would look at you, wide-eyed in fear if you tried to pet her. Not that she didn’t love or trust us, she did. It’s just that petting and snuggling was not her thing. Now, she is a happy-go-lucky little cat who chirps and talks all day long, asking for you to pet her as she rubs her body against your legs when you walk by. She is also the same cat that insists on sitting on top of my head every morning after I get out of the shower (in case you missed that one, please be sure to check out this fun post I did describing it on Catster.)

Sure… Mia is 5 years old. But is she 5 years old and 2 hours? Or is she 5 years, 2 hours and 10 minutes old… I’ll never tell…
Peanut, well, Peanut has remained Peanut throughout her 5 years, the only difference, she is more affectionate, clingy, and needy than before, if that is possible! Peanut does not have a mean bone in her sweet little body and if she could nap on your lap all day, she would. She is our dinner bell cat and will come to me and gently remind me with her paw as she taps my face that it is time for me to break away from the computer to come and serve them dinner.

Okay… enough with the love and kind wishes says Peanut. I need presents or someone is going to have to get hurt!
I love who they have become, yet in some ways it is bittersweet. My darling babies are not kittens anymore and they are getting too old, too fast. Sigh… In any event, I love you my sweet babies and I thank you for each moment I have with you. Happy Birthday and here’s to many, many more!
