A Moment of Silence and Prayers for the Newtown Community

I was supposed to announce the winner of our Sleepypod giveaway today, but you will have to forgive me, as I just can’t find the mental capability at the moment to deal with the everyday moments of life. Like the rest of the world, I find myself in profound pain as I struggle with the incomprehensible events of the Newtown Massacre.

Beautiful, precious, innocent, wonderful human beings gone… some of them practically babies… taken from us far too early and for no reason that any words or reasoning will ever explain, excuse, or justify. My heart just aches and I want to extend my deepest and sincerest sympathies to those that lost life and for those survivors that will have to deal with the mending process that will never be complete.

Whether you are religious or not, prayers have to be offered – it’s all we have and my prayer is for compassion. May the human race find a way to move forward in time to act with kindness and purity of heart with one another. We are an intelligent species with an unlimited capacity for greatness, yet we still kill one another, we still have wars, we still fight over religion, and we debate politics like it is all so important. Is it really? What are we fighting about anymore?  Why do we even have weapons? Maybe I’m too simple minded but I just don’t get it…

All I know is that this senseless, ugly, and obscene violence has to stop and I don’t care if it is a byproduct of mental illness or other emotional issues. If that is the case, then we need to make mental care a priority in our country and not something we sweep under the rug as being trivial. We can’t live in fear of shopping in our malls, going to the movies, or dropping our children off at school. We cannot continue to live in a civilized society where these heinous, unfathomable slaughters are happening around us with an alarming frequency without questioning the fact that we need to make changes in our laws and our own behaviors. Casual violence on TV, movies, and video games… the topic is endless so I will just conclude this post by saying that it must stop – collectively as a society, we must say enough is enough. One innocent loss of life is one too many….

  1. We are so terribly saddened by this tragedy and will never understand what can make a person do it. We agree, the killing has to stop whether it be an atrocity such as this taking of the young innocent lives or in war. What hope is there for humanity while it continues.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families who have lost their loved ones in this evil and senseless act.

  2. Beautifully and perfectly stated. I wanted to blog about this unfathomable event but couldn’t find the words…..you found them for me….perfectly……

  6. Bunny Allen says:

The bible says that God plans our life for us before we are even born. But in such events as this one, you know it had to be the devil himself that intervened God’s plans.
My heart and prayers go out to those affected by this tragedy.

Excellent post – much better than I said in my post this morning. I’m just sick over it, along with so many others. It has to stop!

  10. Kristen Coons says:

Thank you or posting this. I know we have all been mourning the loss of those lost in the senseless tragedy in Connecticut. I want to send out my gratitude to the teachers that hid and protected their children in the chaos that was going on right outside their doors. As scared as those teachers and officials were, they were still brave enough to think clearly and protect their students in the best way they knew how. Many times these people go unnoticed and unnamed. I pray for those families and friends that lost someone they loved. My heart is broken today.

  11. Cat says:

Thank you for putting this so well, Deb. What can we do, but start with ourselves? Peace, compassion, and love. Prayers.

  12. Cheysuli says:

Nicely said. We were in retreat yesterday with a group of Sufis so were minimally able to access the internet–but how grief stricken the community was for the last half of the retreat. Our hearts hurt. The most wonderful quote we saw on our wall about this was, ““The Roots of Violence: Wealth without work, Pleasure without conscience, Knowledge without character, Commerce without morality, Science without humanity, Worship without sacrifice, Politics without principles.Fight the roots of violence and we can inhibit the act of violence.””

  13. As we light our candles tonight, the families who have lost so very much will be in our hearts and our prayers. Thank you for posting….

  14. Marg says:

Too too sad. I sure hope someone can find a way to stop all this nonsense. Stop selling the guns is one way.
Anyway, we too are so upset over all this.

  15. Your words are a reflection of our own thoughts…just much more eloquently put.
When we try to find the words, there is just emptiness and tears.
God bless the children, teachers, families and first responders. We too are taking a break. Laughter just doesn’t have a place today.
