Zoey – The Meaning of Life

Zoey at 12 weeks old

Back in 2008 when I got Zoey as a kitten, I did not research the meaning of her name – it just popped into my head one day prior to getting her as being the perfect sounding name in a household where the letter “Z” took noticeable priority.

It turns out that her name means “life” and the definition could not be more suited to her. Zoey came to us after the loss of a dear cat of mine that I had for over 18 years – Kit. Prior to Kit’s passing, we had one dog in the house, Bandit, and three cats – Jazz (senior), Harley (middle aged), and Zee.  At this point, Zee was two years old and still quite young at heart. Bandit, Jazz, and Harley wanted no part of Zee’s increasing need for playtime and attention and he started to become quite aggressive looking for ways to release his pent up energy.

My sweet Kit...

For all of us, our household was becoming sad, lonely, and terribly off balance. The spark of life that we were used to seeing was gone and it was if we had all become zombies after Kit had left us. As the months went by in slow motion, I just knew the timing was right – we needed an infusion of change and Zee needed a younger playmate. A kitten was just the ticket. But not just any kitten. I wanted my dream cat – a Bengal. Being that I am the quintessential “leopard lady,” this was really not a surprise and I could not wait for the day when she turned 12 weeks old and we were able to go pick up our little spotted darling and bring her to her new fur-ever home.

What I did not realize, was exactly how much Zoey would change our collective lives, both human and furry, and how appropriate her name really was. From the moment we got this petite little ball of fur, she has been a bundle of wild, independent, and free-spirited energy. She radiates life and Zee fell head over heels in love with her the moment he met her. To say she profoundly changed HIS life would be an understandment. To say that she profoundly changed MY life would be an understatement as well.

In the aftermath of Zee & Zoey’s love affair, we received the news of even more life. Zoey was going to have kittens… Not something I was planning on, but once it all sunk in, the renewed life and blessings in our household has increased to such levels that I could not possibly put it into words. Actually, I did try my best to put it into words, after all, I did write a book about it, but I still marvel every day at what a wonderful life I have  because of one tiny little kitty named Zoey whose very name means “life.”

Ironically, when we got Zoey, the name seemed exclusive to her. Now, it seems that I cannot watch one single sitcom, movie, game show, soap opera, talk show, or anything else where that name doesn’t pop up. It is always the beautiful woman who is quirky, pretty, feisty, and independent…. Yup, that would be Zoey to a tee! But, let’s put this on record. We started this first. Plus, our Zoey even has her own logo and a signature heart that is part of the “y” in her name!! For us, she will always be our one-of-a-kind girl!

WOW that is so cool about Zoey’s name, and it does fit her purrfectly. Unfortunately my Sister Zoe never got the ‘y’ on her name so we think her name probably means bossy!

  2. Carolyn says:

She was certainly well-named. I’ve said it before, but she is so beautiful 🙂

Always when I come here I have to spend some time looking at the tableau underneath the comment box. It is very stunning!

i can see why everyone wants to be Zoey. I can’t believe more people don’t want to be Chey…(although there are books about me by someone other than the Woman!)

  4. She’s so beautiful, and what a great story about her! That picture of her with the itty bitty babies just about did me in. I needed some smelling salts to come ’round. MOL.
