While it is something I will do, I only do it when I feel I can approach the item with logic and integrity, which was the case when the people at Scaredy Cut reached out to me to review their Scaredy Cut home pet grooming kit.

The Scaredy Cut is a silent hair cutting and trimming scissor developed for both cats and dogs to make home grooming simple and easy without the anxiety and stress associated with loud and scary buzzing electric clippers or driving to the groomer for a trim. It uses the same comb system as electric clippers, but they are attached to ergonomically designed, barber professional scissors for ease of cutting. When I initially agreed to the review, it was with the intention of using them on Jazz, my long haired Ragdoll, who was increasingly becoming more matted and tangled by the day and the tool looked like a Godsend to shorten the length of his long hair to keep it more manageable. Zoey, Mia, Rolz, Harley, and Peanut are all short haired with no grooming needs, other than some light maintenance brushing, and while Zee and Kizmet do have long hair, it is relatively tangle-free, and with regular brushing, they do not need trims.

Well, several months have passed since I got the Scaredy Cut and I have not had time for a proper review. Now that I finally do, our dear Jazz has aged significantly and his time with me is precious. He does not like me fussing with him and I will not stress him out for the sake of a review. He is in what I call his “nesting stage” and I know I have to make peace with the fact that his physical time on earth is no longer infinite.

My beautiful boy, Jazz

But, that said, it does not mean I can’t recommend the Scaredy Cat and share its virtues with you. I still was able to manage a “test trim” here and there on Zee’s hind quarters and I was impressed with how easy the scissors operated (it is a brush against the direction of the hair growth and cut technique), how clean the cut was, and how easily the interchangeable combs secured on and off. I was used to my past experiences with a terrier dog I had named Hobo who was in constant need of grooming and the process was a huge ordeal that neither he or I enjoyed.

The interchangeable combs easily snap on and off the scissors and stay securely in place.

Hobo was the “Pig Pen” of dogs and for the first couple of years I had him, I brought him to a professional groomer (which he hated) and not only did his frequent trips get expensive, but it was inconvenient having to drop him off and pick him back up. After I got divorced, I could no longer afford the groomer and had to trim him myself with whatever horrible pair of scissors I had available at the time… poor doggie, no wonder he hated the experience and would hide from me when I would come at him with the scissors… he always looked so chopped up and unevenly cut and I felt so sorry for him that I was such an inept groomer! With the Scaredy Cut and the 7 grooming length combs to choose from that come with the kit, that would have eliminated all that stress and aggravation!

This was Hobo back in 2001 – you will note that his fur was in need of a trim and I really could have used the Scaredy Cut back then…

The scissors are not only lightweight and easy to hold, but they are extremely sharp (but safe because of the way the comb secures to them) which ensures a perfectly coiffed cut! And the best part, not only are you saving money – the cost of one Scaredy Cut kit at $31.95 (shipping included) not only pays for itself after one use, but you are actually encouraging special bonding time with your pet! The key to success is taking it easy – brush your dog or cat with the combing tool first to relax them, making it a pleasant ritual that they can look forward to. Depending on how big your pet is and how patient they are, you may want to extend the grooming process over several days. And keep in mind with a cat that you may need to practice the technique a bit longer before you start the actual trimming, as they can be more skittish than dogs when it comes to being fussed with, but with time and patience, you should be able to make the Scaredy Cut work.

The Scaredy Cut comes with 7 combs for various trim lengths that range from 1/2″ to 1″

Scaredy Cut also makes a wonderful accessory trimmer called the “Tiny Trim” which Jazz actually does not mind and I really like them a lot. I am able to use these scissors without worrying about hurting him because they have a rounded safety edge, allowing me to cut into the bulk of his mats, which then makes it easier for me to comb them out without any undue pulling on his sensitive skin. They would also be great for trimming around tufts of fur on the paws, on belly areas of long haired cats that get especially tangled, muzzle areas that get long and dirty on dogs, and hind quarter and tail areas where hygiene might be of concern and they retail for a reasonable $10.95.

If you have a special dog or cat in your life that you think the Scaredy Cut would be perfect for, I have great news!
