Happy Birthday to our 4th of July baby!<\/p><\/div>\n

Today is a very special day. Not only is it America\u2019s birthday, it\u2019s also our Kizmet\u2019s 5th<\/sup> birthday! I came upon Kizmet when he was about 5 months old in 2012. I saw him in an adoption cage at Pet Supermarket and it was love at first sight – I knew he belonged in our family, Dan wholeheartedly agreed, and the rest is history. From nearly the moment he came into our lives, he had the wise and kind temperament of an old soul. He\u2019s also an odd duck and absolutely beats to the march of his own drum.<\/p>\n

Look at this little face! Is it any wonder I fell in love with this precious boy?<\/p><\/div>\n

For example \u2013 Zee, Zoey, Mia, Peanut, Rolz and Jazmine \u2013 no matter whether it\u2019s breakfast, dinner, or an evening snack \u2013 you would think they\u2019ve never been fed before. Ever. The theatrics are impressive \u2013 incessant and loud meowing, jumping up and down from the counter, and weaving underneath my legs while I prepare the food. All of them doing this in one noisy, crazed group, as if somehow it hastens the feeding process.<\/p>\n

Kizmet stands by on the counter; reserved, polite, and quite cognizant he will get fed regardless of the show and doesn\u2019t need to demonstrate his desire to eat. Actually, he\u2019s so unmotivated by the act of eating sometimes I have to wander through the house to find him and bring him into the kitchen. It\u2019s not that he doesn\u2019t eat or won\u2019t eat; he just prefers to live in his own little world. He\u2019s also easily distracted – I sometimes think he has ADD, if there is such a thing for a cat, and I often have to stand next to him while he eats, prompting him to pay attention to his food, lest his lurker in wait, Jazmine, grabs his food.<\/p>\n

Kizmet loves the kitchen counter. As a result, he believes it belongs exclusively to him!<\/p><\/div>\n

In case it’s not clear, this is Kizmet’s space on the cat condo!<\/p><\/div>\n

No big deal…we can just walk around you, Kizmet!<\/p><\/div>\n

He\u2019s also a very loving cat who enjoys being held (often jumping on Dan\u2019s back for attention) but he\u2019s also very territorial if the other cats inadvertently walk into his peripheral space. My counter. My cat condo. My floor. My humans. My air. But he\u2019s never mean about it. No claws, no hissing, just a brief and courteous swat to let you know you best move on.<\/p>\n

I love him dearly and he\u2019s fiercely devoted to me. He showed his loyalty to me during the most extreme of times. When I lost my precious Jazz at the age of 15 in 2013 and Harley a mere year later, he was at my side like glue to comfort me. And every evening since then, it\u2019s become a habit of his to come behind me on the couch, lay his head on mine, and wrap his paws around me like he\u2019s hugging me.<\/p>\n

There are not enough words to translate how much both Kizmet and I enjoy our couch time together.<\/p><\/div>\n

He\u2019s a sweet boy \u2013 he was the first to welcome\u00a0Jazmine when she came on board as a kitten after we lost Jazz and they remain best buddies. We\u2019re so blessed to have him as part of our family and I wish him many, many more happy birthday\u2019s!<\/p>\n

As stated, the kitchen counter belongs to Kizmet. Only exception, his beloved Jazmine… True love indeed.<\/p><\/div>\n
