But as I get older, I find it nearly impossible to recreate the past. Some traditions remain, some are replaced, and some quietly drift to the wayside, parked as private memories, tucked into the back recesses of my mind.

Surprisingly, I’ve decided I like the ebb and flow of it. Change can be okay because honestly, giving thanks starts from within and it matters not where you are, or who you are with, as long as you are grateful for what you have. And I am. I’m grateful for my wonderfully imperfect family. Some of them live close by, and some I’m separated by thousands of miles, but all live in my heart. I’m also grateful for my precious cats, for my job, and for all of my beloved friends I’ve met from blogging and social media.

This year my oldest son will be cooking his first Thanksgiving dinner at his new home and Dan and I will be guests. It’s a very different role for me. I’m accustomed to hosting holiday dinners, but I must admit it feels wonderful to have someone else in charge. I’ll be getting up early to participate in our local 5K turkey trot and then I’ll be making a wonderful desert to bring with us. Throwing complete caution to the wind, it’s something I’ve never made before – layered almond cream cheese bread pudding with Amaretto cream sauce. Who knows if it will taste any good, but anything that has Amaretto in it can’t be that bad!

I’m just grateful for the simplicity of it all. It’s been a very long and stressful road of late, between publishing a book (Makin’ Biscuits – Weird Cat Habits and the Even Weirder Habits of the Humans Who Love Them) and a brutal political year, and I’m happy for the break. And I hope all of you are able to take a moment or two to be thankful for what you have in your life, even if your life isn’t exactly where you expected it to be. Life gives us highs, and it gives us lows, I’m just grateful to share a bit of it with you.

Peace, love, and blessings from Deb, Dan, Zee, Zoey, Mia, Peanut, Rolz, Kizmet, Jazmine, and angels Jazz and Harley.

While not here in the physical sense, my beautiful angels – Jazz and Harley – will spend Thanksgiving in my heart, as they do each and every day.

Give all your kitties extra special loving, and for all our beloved fur angels watching us from above, please know that you remain forever in our hearts and we are so blessed and thankful for the memories of the time we shared together.

For the safety of your cats who will be participating in Thanksgiving in the physical sense, we created a simple to read graphic of the “do’s” and “don’ts” of what to do when it comes to feeding kitty (who will be looking at you with those irresistible eyes, begging ever so adorably for table scraps).
