Three Super Bowls for Your Cat

As if Angry Bird isn’t angry enough…now he has to deal with these less than super feeding bowls…

Hey everyone! We’re giving our human a break today and sharing some of our own thoughts. We heard today is the Super Bowl and all we can say is hooray! We’ve got some super bowls at our house and it’s about time we got a whole day to meow about them! Bowls mean food to us and eating is one of our all-time favorite things to do. The problem – while our human did mean well – you know, feeding us healthy food on a regular basis and all, years ago she was doing it using stainless steel bowls that were anything but super. She wasn’t a cat expert back then and didn’t realize they weren’t the best option for our health.

What she didn’t know is that they weren’t adequately designed to accommodate our delicate whiskers. Our whiskers are almost like another set of eyes to us and are so sensitive we can detect even the slightest change in our surroundings. I’m sure you’ve seen us with that faraway look, seeing something you don’t, and part of it is because we can sense things before you do.

Your cat’s whiskers are rooted deeply in her skin and the area around them has a very generous supply of nerves and blood. This makes the whisker tips so sensitive that they can detect even the slightest change in their environment.

Anyhow, these small bowls can force our whiskers into close contact with the sides of the bowl, causing us stress and discomfort (known as whisker fatigue), which we translate to things like leaving food in our bowl even though we’re still hungry, pulling food out of our bowl with our mouth or paw to eat off the floor, leaving a mess on the floor (a classic favorite of ours), only eating from the center of the bowl, acting aggressive toward each other during mealtime (another favorite of ours), and standing by the bowl before eating for a period of time, pacing around the bowl, or being hesitant to eat.

She’s gone to lots of cat events since then and every time she comes back, not only does she bring back presents, but she learns stuff too. Some of the things she’s come back with have been bowls and we have to say, not only are they super bowls, they’re super-awesome bowls! Here are some of our favorites along with why we like them so much:

Dr. Catsby’s Feline Remedies Feeding Bowl – this sleek stainless steel bowl is made with a wide and shallow design and is slightly raised from the floor to promote better digestion for us. The stainless steel is bacteria resistant, making cleanup a breeze for our human. It also has a removable rubber base underneath it so our food doesn’t slide all around when we eat. Our Kizmet eats on the kitchen counter and this is his bowl of preference – no more bowls filled with food dropping to the floor!

The Dr. Catsby bowl is simple in construction but big on the ergonomically correct design!

Kizmet waits patiently for his dinner, happy to know his bowl no longer slides to the floor!

ModaPet Raised Feeding Bowl – simply put, these bowls are stunning. They have a clean and elegant design that is saturated with a rich, lush color and are crafted to be both fashionable and functional. Dishwasher safe, the bowls are made of a food grade ABS polymer that is BPA free (BPA stands for bisphenol and is an industrial chemical that can be used when making certain plastics and resins that are often used in containers that store food and beverages) and they are finished with a gloss to lock in the color, giving it the look of glass or glazed porcelain.

The bowls are elevated an inch or so above the floor on a pedestal, which is a healthier way for us to eat. They bring our food to a more comfortable eating level – especially for our older buddy, Zee, who is becoming arthritic and finding it difficult to stoop down to floor level to eat. Raised dishes also help prevent vomiting, something that is caused by a reflex muscle in the throat that reacts when we lift our head after eating from a level below our stomach.

Jazmine is quite happy with her ModaPet bowl, licking it clean!

We also don’t make a mess on the floor anymore and this is our human’s favorite bowl for us. Unfortunately, these bowls are really hard to find now and it looks like the company is no longer in business. You really have to do some searching around, but our human has found them on Amazon, eBay, and other pet related sites.

Loving Pets Milano Designer Bowls – while these bowls are not raised like the others, they are just so fun, cute, and stylish that we couldn’t resist mentioning them! They have a wide, stainless steel bowl (much wider than a standard stainless bowl) and the gorgeous outer shell is made from tough BPA-free ABS plastic in a fade-resistant design with a removable skid-free rubber base to reduce slips and spills. The feeding bowl is made of a bacteria resistant stainless steel that removes for easy cleaning and is dishwasher safe. Best of all is the fun sayings on each bowl, such as “Spoiled” or “Princess.” Our human gets a kick out of that, although we don’t understand why. She likes to use these bowls for water or treats. The easiest way to find these bowls is to do a search on Amazon.

Diva? Spoiled? While Zoey is the model here, this really could be any of us!

Every cat knows their food tastes better in another cat’s bowl!

We hope you enjoyed our super bowl commentary as much as we did. And I guess if you’re bored today, there’s something on TV later called the Super Bowl. What an odd coincidence. Wonder what bowl of bowls is the superest of them all? Do you have a favorite super bowl for your cat?

  1. What a great insight into what makes a good bowl. I shall look for a non slip mat for my metal bowls, which are very light and slide easily.

Those do look like super bowls. I will be looking into getting wider, raised bowls for our cats to replace the old glass dishes we’ve been using.
