The Sunday Drive

Editor’s Note: Things have been a bit hectic here lately, so we are very happy to have Zeuss Catt from Boston back with one of his entertaining and informative posts. For those of you that might be new to Zee & Zoey’s Chronicle Connection, Zeuss is one of Zee & Zoey’s offspring who moved to Boston when he was a kitten. Zeuss has quite a knack for writing and his penchant for adventure is always amazing to me!  As you read his post to follow, you might be wondering why he mentions learning how to drive… click here to read about that escapade in case you missed it!
I may have lost my desire to learn how to drive, but I still have a strong appreciation for motor vehicles.  Sometimes I sit in the front window for hours watching the various cars and trucks pass our house.  The humans, sharp creatures that they are, noticed my automobile affinity and came up with a wonderful idea…

For the past few weeks I’ve been joining them on their Sunday drives to the pet store!

This new Sunday custom began for me in early October.  Just like every other day, one of the humans grabbed my leash and vest, signalling to me that it was time to go outside into the backyard.  I allowed myself to get suited up and waited for the door to open.  As I waited I noticed that not only one, but TWO humans would be joining me on my walk.  The more the merrier is what I always say, at least when it comes to humans.  What I didn’t notice was that one of them was holding a set of truck keys.

Out we went, but instead of running onto the grass per usual we headed over to the driveway.  One of the vehicles parked there was the truck in which I took my brief driving lesson.  The door was being held open for me so I jumped right into the back seat.  Both humans got in as well and closed the doors behind them.

What’s going on here, I thought?  And then I heard the truck start up.

We were going for a ride!  And not to the vet’s office, but to the food store!

The trip to the store only took ten minutes, but I loved every second.  I stood in the back seat most of the time, watching traffic pass all around us.  The truck is pretty tall, so I was able to look down onto many drivers.  Some noticed me and waved, and I nodded back to them.   Some even laughed.  NONE of the other vehicles had a cat passenger.

The only thing that I wasn’t allowed to do was stick my head out the window.  (They told me that I wasn’t a dog, as if I didn’t know…)  I was allowed to come into the front seat for a few minutes, standing on the arm rest.  When we arrived at the the store, I decided to wait in the car, and one of the humans waited with me while the other went inside.  For the ride home, I remained in the back seat.

So, that was the story of my first Sunday drive.  Since then I’ve taken the ride to the pet store with the humans every other Sunday, and I’ve shown them that I’m very comfortable riding in the truck.  So comfortable, in fact, that they treated me to another “first” this past Sunday…

That is so great that he likes to ride in the truck. Our Mom had a cat names Sassy that rode all over with her
in her pick up. He was great and enjoyed it a lot. We liked that post a lot. Have a fun week end.

It really is cool that he enjoys it Marg! My cats are not quite as adventuresome, but I guess it’s how you raise them too! Sassy sounds wonderful!

Wow! You are one lucky cat! Being of the canine persuasion, I go for the head-out-the-window approach myself, but I must say you are more adventuresome than my kittehs ever thought of being! Next you’ll be going to a cat park (hmmmm, do they have such things?)

  3. Loved this. It’s good experience for future trips.

Those pictures are wonderful. Zeuss is obviously enjoying himself! I remember as a kid our brown tabby, Mynty, used to love going in the car with Dad. She used to sit across his shoulders. Nowadays there are laws that prohibit cats in vehicles unless they are in a carrier!

    Great post 🙂

  5. Cheysuli says:

Good for you for enjoying your rides!

  6. Zeuss says:

@Carolyn I wasn’t aware aware of the carrier laws, and I’m pretty sure fairly certain that my humans aren’t either. Please don’t tell them!!!

@Deb Mia’s trip to the mall was very adventurous, and her blogging about it inspired my request for driving lessons:)

  7. Talk about taking something “ordinary” and making it “extraordinary!!!”

It is no surprise to me Zeuss that you are “extraordinary!” Look at your parents!!!!

I love your serious expression, taking in your surroundings. You are definitely wiser than your years!

My mom said to tell you that she used to take Grandpa Bobo for rides all the time. He loved it too. It was good to do because then he didn’t always associate the car with the vet.

Mom and I loved this post!
Happy travels Zeuss and one day when you are “motoring” you should take a ride to the “Motor City!!”

    Love, Cody and Mom

Caren and Cody – We’re glad you enjoyed this post!! I find the whole thing quite fascinating – while Zeuss is certainly not unique in that he rides in the car, being that he lives in a predominatly male household and gets a lot of quality time doted on him, he really takes on more of a loyal “dog” personality than his siblings. I often wonder if he would be the same Zeuss if we had kept him, or if he had a different human than Sean. Zeuss is so intelligent and I really marvel at his open-mindedness to so much in his life that my cats would freak out over!!

Wow, that is so cool that Zeuss enjoys riding in the car! We had a cat named Happy when I was a kid, and he too, loved to go for a ride. 🙂

    • Deb says:

That is so cool meowmeowmans! I can’t believe how many people have cats who love to ride in the car. My cats would HATE it. Although maybe if it was not associated with the dreaded carrier and the vet, it would be different…

  9. Carolyn says:

Message for Zeuss. The carrier laws are in the UK, so you probably are ok, but I won’t say anything just in case 😉

  10. OH Dog! A cat that likes to ride in the car- how cool is that! But the pressing question that I have is…. did ya get a Slurpie?

  11. Prudence says:

Wow! What a lucky kitty! We love our car rides (as long as we’re not going to the vet’s!). So far our kitties are only in the car when they’re in their carriers (bol! Going to the vet!). Mom’s thinking maybe we should try a harness and see if they like it! May even stop at the 7/11!!!

    • Deb says:

Hmmm Prudence…. I think Zeuss might be starting the newest craze for cats!! I think perhaps Pet Supermarket should be open 24/7 for kitties who feel the urge to drive and shop!!
