Ten Great Reasons to Celebrate Jazmine for Her 7th Birthday

Then and now. Our Jazmine has matured into such a beautiful adult cat.

Seven years. Our precious, beautiful, and loving ginger baby, Jazmine, is seven years old today. When Dan and I first came upon her at Global Pet Expo in March of 2014 at the Imperial Cat booth as a rescue kitten up for adoption, there was an initial internal struggle of “do we,” or “don’t we,” despite her melting our hearts instantly upon looking at her sweet face. It wasn’t so much because we didn’t want to, it was more a matter of me specifically. We had recently lost our beloved Ragdoll, Jazz, in 2013 and I didn’t know if I was mentally ready for another cat in my life or acclimating it to our seven other residing cats in an already fragile cat dynamic, no matter how ridiculously adorable this kitten was.

But then I held her in my arms. How could I not? Picking up a cat is part of my DNA and it would have been absurdly pointless to think otherwise, especially when the cat is a kitten. I’m not a monster, after all. Seconds later, after weaving her magic spell of “you’re going to fall in love with me and bring me home,” we did just that and our lives have never been the same.

After holding her, what choice did I really have other than adopting her?

I could write an endless post as to all the wonderful ways Jazmine has enriched our lives. Or share story after story of all the funny or endearing things she’s done. But since it’s her birthday, I thought I’d simply focus on ten great reasons to love our birthday girl along with pictures, too.

1. Every day, night, afternoon, morning, or any time in-between is the perfect time for a no-holds-barred, belly-up cat nap. Who wouldn’t envy the ability to be that relaxed at any given moment? And don’t even get me started on that irresistibly soft and fluffy tummy…

We have hundreds of pictures of Jazmine and nearly all of them feature her in some sort of belly-up pose!

2. She helps to give me a good workout trying to find her. For a big cat, Jazmine can fit into the smallest places, some more obvious than others and it can be a fun game trying to figure out where she is.

I spotted her rather quickly in our bedroom – notwithstanding the thumping tail – a telltale giveaway – but she was certain I had no idea where she was!

3. She brings presents to those she loves. This is especially endearing during our working remotely from home days. It’s always a nice break from the 9 to 5 grind to hear her chirping in the background, announcing a plush gift is about to be bestowed someone’s way.

Jazmine has been bringing toys to us since she was a kitten. She still does, but now she accompanies the act with a very vocal serenade and she won’t stop until you tell her “thank you” for the gift.

4. While not always easy to appreciate, I do love a girl with conviction. She might not be best friends yet with our newest feline resident, Shadow (or even amicable enemies) but she’s no pushover and I’m still hopeful one day there will be a truce or at least a from-a-distance-tolerance.

Shadow will have been with us for a year this coming November, but Jazmine is still showing no signs of warming up to him.

5. She’s a lovely dinner companion. Or breakfast. Or lunch. Or just walking into the kitchen for whatever random reason companion. This girl is OBSESSED with food and no matter what it is you’re eating, for even those with the toughest of resilience, she’ll melt your heart as she tilts her head, locking her eyes with yours (a trick so you won’t realize she’s stealing food off your plate) while she chirps the most insistent and polite meow that you simply must give her a morsel of your food, lest she perishes from the indignity of it all. And she will win. She always does.

Jazmine could be soundly napping, but if food is involved, you can be sure she’ll wake up to become a part of helping with preparations!

6. I’ve had numerous health issues over the years, in particular, some pretty intense eye surgeries. Jazmine shines in these moments. Not so much in an active sense, but with her incredible snuggling and purring powers. There were times during my recovery I was not allowed to move from the couch at all, not even to go to bed at night, and neither did my couch buddy, Jazmine.

There is no doubt Jazmine (and Zee, too) helped aid in my recovery. How could anyone not feel better with a goof-ball like that on their lap?

7. Her floofy and gorgeous ginger cat tail. Seriously. Just look at it. Do I really need to say more?

That. Tail. OMG. (She’s sharing the spotlight with her best buddy, Kizmet)

8. Jazmine is a goof at heart and she always makes me smile. For example, despite a comfortable bed and oodles of cushions for her to lounge on, she will pick a random place to nap, like on the hard floor, squished as close to the bed as possible. One has to marvel at how her mind works.

The bed is right there for all the taking, but Jazmine prefers to nap flush next to it, fully stretched out.

9. Cats making biscuits is one of my favorite cat traits and Jazmine is a pro. So much so, she was the inspiration for the cover of my award-winning Makin’ Biscuits – Weird Cat Habits and the Even Weirder Habits of the Humans Who Love Them book. Jazmine will make biscuits any time she is content, which is the majority of the time, and she even makes biscuits in the air when she sees someone she loves because she’s so happy to see them!

10. She stole my heart when she was a kitten with her beauty and she steals my heart to this day with her beauty.

Jazmine looking simply divine in her full, glorious beauty.

So, there you have it, 10 great reasons (among millions) to love Jazmine. Happy birthday precious girl and wishes for many, many more.
