Classic Cat Behaviors that Often Defy Logic!

This is as basic as it gets – give your cat the best creature comforts of home and she’ll somehow find a way around it…

“Cattisms” – those nearly universal behavioral traits our cats have is something I could talk about all day and night if you let me. That’s probably why I enjoyed writing Makin’ Biscuits – Weird Cat Habits and the Even Weirder Habits of the Humans Who Love Them so much – being a cat lover my whole life; I’ve got an endless supply of cattism experience! But, alas, I have laundry to do, and a house to clean, and bills to pay. Time’s a-wastin’ and there are only so many hours in a day! So, rather than focus on all those funny, weird, quirky, and iconic behaviors our cats have, I thought I’d share some of my favorites for today!

Take a peek – I’m sure you’ll recognize your cat in most of these scenarios!

Peanut is insisting Zoey is eating something different than her, and must, therefore, eat Zoey’s food.

My cats get three meals a day. Three exactly the same meals. Multiply this by every day of the week, for years on end, and I think you get the picture. Not much changes. Despite that, no matter the day or hour, all of my cats are POSITIVE the food in any bowl other than their own, is better than what they’re eating.

Look at all those amazing cat toys! Where’s the cat? In the box they came in, of course!

No matter how many amazing cat toys I get for the gang, invariably it is the box they came in that generates the most interest. It also goes without saying that despite how fancy or expensive a toy is, nothing beats a wadded up ball of scrap paper to play with, or a bug.

It’s pretty simple – if you get up from your chair, you do it at your own risk…

The universal truth of this statement can’t be over-exaggerated. Go to the bathroom? Get a cup of coffee? Sure thing, but please don’t expect your chair to be empty when you come back. Never mind the dozens of cat condos, cat beds, pillows, cushions and everything else you have for kitty. With a cat, there is no stronger lure than a chair that you want to sit in.

Rolz will literally wait on the kitchen counter the entire day if he has to. But he always wins…

I’m always amazed at the patience cats have. Especially when it comes to snacks. I joke that Rolz is my T.M.B.S. cat (There Might Be Something), but he’s always right. No matter the circumstances, I will eventually cave in and give him a snack. I can’t resist his adorable meow and he knows it. Most cats are masters at manipulating us humans and I’m certain they know that!

If my cats were people, this would be them back in the 1970’s when the rage was trying to stuff as many people as you could into a Volkswagen Beetle.

Not to overstate a point, but again, our house has DOZENS of cat condos, cat beds, pillows, cushions, and more devoted just to cats. Add in the human furniture, like beds, couches, and chairs, and there really is endless napping options for the cats. So, what do they do? They pile on top of one other in the most obscure and uncomfortable ways imaginable!

If Zoey’s meow were a ring-tone, no one would ever miss a call again…

Maybe it was back in the 70’s when I was trying to stuff myself with my friends into a Volkswagen Beetle, that’s probably the last time I’ve slept in. Okay, I’m exaggerating, but I know with Zoey (and Peanut) at the helm, I haven’t slept in, in years, because to them, the hours between 4:30 a.m. – 5:30 a.m. are when the entire household needs to be up. This is relayed in loud, persistent, and ear-piercing meows. Doesn’t matter if it’s a weekend, and it doesn’t matter if you’re exhausted to the bone. When it’s time to get up, it’s time to get up. Which I do. And then what do they do practically minutes after I get up and feed them breakfast? They go back to bed, of course, for a nearly all day long nap.

Happy Sunday and don’t forget, in the spirit of all that’s weird, I’m so excited to offer you the opportunity to win one of five copies of my award-winning book, Makin’ Biscuits – Weird Cat Habits and the Even Weirder Habits of the Humans Who Love Them in a giveaway hosted by the pawsome folks at the Purrington Post.

Reminds me of my cat Chris. When he was young he had numerous cat toys but he preferred to play with the cap to my water bottle.

Those sure made the Dad laugh out loud!!!

  3. I love them all, and all very true. I see a lot of the behaviour you describe in us felines, in humans and children in particular. But we are supremely practical and I think humans can gain a lot from watching and copying what we do. Of course the down side would be…. nope cant think of one, just lots of happy purring humans who don’t wage war and sleep a lot MOL

Yes! Everything you mention and more! Ollie does what Rolz does. His patience amazes me. I’ve trained them to sit on their treat station and each night close to tea time after supper, he would hop on the station and wait …. and wait …. all the while watching me do final kitchen clean up, give meds to my older cat, sweep, put the kettle on etc. Once he sees me open the treat cupboard and get the treats and clicker, he lets out this irresistible semi silent half meow that just melts my heart. He would sit there the whole night if he has to. MOL
    Happy Sunday!

Yep! *All of the above*! Most times, Elvis will stampede into Suha’s room because he is POSITIVE she’s getting something better than he is at mealtimes. I have to usher him out and shut the door so she can eat in peace.

  8. We love them all, and Claire can relate ! Purrs

  10. That sleeping on the hard floor instead of a soft cat bed cracks me up every time! And when they fall asleep with their neck on the edge of a box…looks SO uncomfortable!

  11. I always figure my sisfur Paprika is getting some tidbits I am NOT so I ALWAYS check out her bowl and try to take at least one nibble out of it before my human guides me away. She loves your post and thinks you are the perfect CAT-DESCRIBER!!!

  12. That’s what makes us cats so unique!

  13. Ellen Pilch says:

I relate to all except the morning wake ups. I am lucky they let us sleep until at least 7:30 am 🙂

  14. meowmeowmans says:

Oh yeah. That claiming “your” spot on the couch thing happens all the time at our house. Gracie lives for that! MOL.

  15. Yes, the cats seem perplexed by our annoyance at getting up at 3:30AM on weekends to feed them. After all we could just go back to bed after eating breakfast like THEY DO. Doggies are much nicer they never tell me when they are hungry just wait patiently. ~Alasandra
