For Cats, it’s all About Location, Location, Location When it Comes to Cat Napping!

Mia-tab;e

This was the photo Dan took of Mia in the Nature Pet bed from West Paw Design. She was gracious enough to be our cat model for the blog piece and the bed was to be moved elsewhere after the photo shoot.

Maybe you remember – a couple of weeks ago I did a piece on West Paw Design pet products in honor of Pet Appreciation Week. One of the items I received for my cats to review was a Nature Nap cat bed in a bright turquoise and white color in a zigzag pattern. Nothing against the bed, it truly is beautiful and well made, but it does not fit into the scheme of my warm, neutral-toned house that is peppered with leopard print everywhere.

The bed was originally put on the table in the hallway, you know the table I mean – the one that is only about 12 inches wide that the cats hijacked recently, forcing me to remove the lovely floral arrangement that used to reside on it so that they could sleep there instead… because apparently the 143 other cat beds, cat condos, cat trees, human beds, couches, tables, counters, TV stands, wall perches, hampers, ottomans, and chairs that they had already claimed in the house to sleep on were not enough…

I made this floral arrangement and it had been gracing our house for years on the little table in the hallway… That is, until Jazmine came into our lives…

The fascination with the table started about a year ago – Rolz liked to sit next to the flowers and would ponder world affairs from there. Eventually Jazmine became equally fascinated with sitting on the table, not so much to reflect, but so that she could relax and fully stretch her belly, which was made difficult and awkward for the poor darling due to the floral arrangement. Being the overly accommodating folks that we are, Dan and I decided to remove the floral arrangement so that our spoiled precious Jazmine would be more comfortable. And truly, what choice did we have?

So we removed the flowers… to be replaced by both Rolz and Jazmine… Very pretty I must say…

Once we did that, along with the Nature Nap bed – one cat, two cats, three cats – like some weird cat pulling magnet this table has become THE ONLY PLACE to be as they now insist on napping together in some combination of togetherness, scrunching their precious little bodies into awkward positions. It typically starts with one – usually it is Zee – and then much to his chagrin, Zoey will jump up, then Mia. It truly is a sight to see and it reminds me of days gone by when it was popular to see how many teenagers could stuff themselves into a Volkswagen Bug!

Want to find a cat? Just add a Nature Nap cat bed to a plain table top and wait about 2 seconds… Results guaranteed…

I had hoped the bed would find a new home after the photo shoot, somewhere discreet in the house where the vibrant pattern wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb, but obviously that is not going to happen. And to make matters worse, the cats decided the leather topping on the table made a great scratching post, so I had to put a towel underneath it to deter them, making the combination of colors even more atrocious (it’s a leopard print towel, but even so, it didn’t help matters).

Kizmet&Zoey

And now it’s offical… the table has been draped with a protective towel and the first string of residents has moved in – Kizmet and Zoey…

Mia, Zoey, and Zee take over with the next table napping shift…

And here we have Zee, Mia, and Zoey again. What you have to understand here, is that Mia absolutely adores her mama Zoey and papa Zee. Despite being totally squashed in, she wouldn’t dare move because she loves being with her parents so much!

But, that’s how it goes in my house. I adore my cats and if it means sacrificing a page in Better Homes and Gardens, then so be it. The only color that is really important to me is the color of happiness and judging by their behavior, clearly we have a crayon box full of love and contentment.

Who needs a perfectly color coordinated home? When you have cats like Mia and Zee, that’s all you really need to make a home purrfect…

I think probably the reason they are so drawn to the small table is because it seems to be a central, pivotal spot to the whole house where they can co-exist with their beloved humans on the same level. I also think it is because some of the cats – Mia, Peanut, Zee, and Zoey, in particular, have finally reconciled Jazmine’s presence in the house and prefer to spend time outside of the dark bedroom where they had been previously napping to avoid her. She is officially one of the gang now and it’s like she been with us from the beginning of time!

What about your house? Do you have a particular cat item that clashes like crazy, but because you love your cat(s) so much, you keep it front and center for their comfort and convenience? We’d love to hear your stories.

Happy Caturday all and an early Happy Father’s Day to those that celebrate the day!

  1. Well my mom-person bought a tunnel that was purple , white , green and blue striped that wen´t well with the sofa.
    Me never used it !
Then she won a bright red BIG tunnel , me LOVES it and don´t care if it goes with the sofa or not 😀
    Neither does my mom-person 🙂
Happy weekend to you all !
    XOXO

  2. We live in a small apartment and elegant decorating is not an option. Geoff recently got a delivery that came in a large box. The product was surround by the earth friendly brown paper – and lots of it. The central focus in the LR now is the sea of flowing brown paper. The cats love it!

  3. Ingrid King says:

This is what’s known as “easy catification:” take an item of furniture that really belongs to the humans, add a cat bed, and voila! Instant cat furniture!

  4. Marg says:

It is funny, if you put something new in the house or just move something over a foot or so, it is very attractive to everyone. That table was a nice new spot to hang out. Great pictures.

  5. Sounds like the perfect spot! My first thought when I saw the color of that bed, is how it clashed with all your animal print! In my house, everything clashes. I have little kids and their toys and things, there’s no hope for some years of having a home that’s soothing to my eyes.

  6. I like how you gave in and let the cats dictate the decor. It’s that way around here and I don’t care as long as the cats are happy. Besides those of us who have a natural design sense make it work.

  7. We love the pictures of Mia with her mama & daddy, and of Zoey being groomed by Kizmet. Well, we love ALL the pictures! 😉 For a while we had a bright pink 6-foot-tall cat climbing/napping gym of cubes and ramps (by KittyCity). We all loved it, and our purrents didn’t care that it didn’t go with anything in the house!

  8. Too funny….and really nothing in our house matches. We have a smorgasbord of Mark’s taste and my taste, Abby’s cat things and Roxanne’s dog things. But to us…it just all blends rather nicely.

  9. Flynn says:

They are all lovely photos, but Zee, Zoey and Mia together are adorable.

  10. We agree…the house should be decorated for us cats. The mom has yet to get living room furniture and has now decided that the living room is the cats’ room…and all our stuff is in there. 🙂

  11. Well, we have many cat items that clashes, but the pink PTU in the orange/blue room is the worst ! Mum says it’s all about cats, no matter the home design ! Purrs

  12. You are TOTALLY right. Location is extremely important when it comes to nappin’. Location and boxes and, of course, the location of said boxes. Can’t beat a good box in an excellent location, if you know what I mean.

    Purrs,
    Nissy

  13. Sue Brandes says:

Isn’t it funny how cats always find the best spots. I have had to move many things too.
