Cat Weather Prediction for South Florida – Hot and Sunny with a High Probability of Window Napping

Yeah…it’s hot out! Remember to keep yourself and your pets hydrated!

Rainy season in South Florida typically begins sometime in the month of May. True to form, I think it rained nearly every single day since then, up until June 21st, the official first day of summer. Mother Nature, taking it as a literal cue, flipped a switch and it was officially hot. Unlike other regions in the country, we don’t gradually ramp up to summer, you just wake up one morning and it’s 90 degree hot.

Like everything else, you just get used to it. I do my gardening in the early morning hours and spend the rest of my time in the comfort of air conditioning. My cats know of no other life and they take it in stride. They never lived in Upstate New York like I once did, so they know nothing of the opposite of our weather – the bitter cold of winter. A rainy day just means a break from window snoozing and more cuddling time on the couch and the hot days of summer are an endless opportunity to bask in the warmth of the sun.

Rainy day? No problem if you’re a cat in our house…it just means more couch snuggling time together!

We have a house with lots of windows and each room presents its own unique smorgasbord of sunshine options. From the Sunny Seat affixed to our dining room window that overlooks our tropical backyard paradise to the more cozy and traditional setup of pillows and blankets on the floor of assorted rooms in our house, there is always a cat somewhere soaking up the sun.

Rolz is taking his turn napping on the Sunny Seat in the dining room. It’s prime real-estate in our house – first come, first serve!

Kizmet is enjoying a nap on his favorite cat condo – it’s situated next to both a window and our front door, so there’s always plenty of sunshine to nap in!

Mia is napping on top of some kitty cubes we have next to the front door. We topped them with a cozy blanket and it’s perfect for late-afternoon sun napping!

Zee prefers to soak up the sun on the living room couch – this location gives him the best visibility of the whole house at once!

We have a blanket in the front hallway for Peanut. We put it out one Christmas to sit on while unwrapping gifts and it’s been there ever since because its become her favorite!

Classic Zoey pose as she soaks up the sun. She truly is a beauty and this quote is perfect for her!

And if the sun gets too warm, often a cat will be spotted belly up on the floor or the dining room table – what is surely a delightful combination of the cool hardness on the body in conjunction with the warmth of the sun. Oh to be a cat… Have a wonderful Sunday all and try to stay cool!

This is Jazmine on the dining room table – it looks like the sun has made a warm spotlight, just for her!

Cats are actually drawn to warmth (one of the reasons they love to nap in boxes and closed spaces) because a cat’s normal body temperature is several degrees higher than ours and they seek it out. Oh oh – i think I’m in love! Zoe you are gorgeous. Actually all the kitties are, but I’m really smitten with Zoe. I lay in a window full of sunshine too for as long as the sun shines there. It is so very warm and cozy. M always worries about sunburn, but I just tell her she worries too much!

Yes I agree, you just wake up to HOT! We have a big screen room and the kitties love it. Sometimes I don’t when they decide to play “have mom chase us around the screen room” when I need to get them in. Where in south Florida are you? I am in the WPB area.

    • Deb says:

Hi Linda! You sure do understand what I mean – we’re sorta neighbors! I live in the Fort Lauderdale area/Broward county.
