“Big Red”

In our house, it’s that time of year when “Big Red” comes out. Or what we like to call it, “A Big Deal Production.” Big Red is a glorious big, red, soft, and warm blanket that graces our bed with much pomp and circumstance during what we call our “cold spell” in Florida. Flip flops are traded in for shoes and socks, tank tops are replaced with a sweater, and we have to stop grilling outside. This can literally go on for 3 or 4 days in a row and causes much water cooler talk about just how chilly it is.

For the cats, Big Red is a HUGE PRODUCTION and quite an ordeal! Once they see that blanket on the bed, like a catnip magnet, they are on top of it with insatiable curiosity and glee. After a bit of sniffing, kneading, and exploring, all of them settle in for a mid-winters slumber and Big Red is soon “Big Red Covered in Cat Hair.”

All seven kitties - Clockwise: Zoey, Harley, Zee, Rolz, Peanut, Mia, and Jazz

While I do write this in jest, and I know folks that have real cold weather, with real snow to shovel and things of that effect, it actually is a serious issue. Crops can quickly freeze over and become completely damaged, outdoor wildlife can suffer, and pets that are not accustomed to the cold weather can also suffer. Proper care needs to be used to ensure that our plants and animals are safe. It is also a very dangerous time because a lot of people bring out space heaters that are used incorrectly, which result in fires.

So, while we enjoy the brief change in temperature and the cats enjoy “Big Red,” I for one am looking forward to putting my flip flops and tank tops back on waiting for Mother Nature to bring us back on course… While she’s at it, some much needed rain would be nice too…

We need to find you a red leopard print blanket…

  2. We have red in our blog post titles today! That looks so cozy and yet regal with the kitties.

    • Deb says:

It is a crazy cozy blanket Layla – it makes it very hard to get out of bed in the morning! I will stop by your blog later to check out your “red!”

  3. RumpyDog! says:

Oh Dog! My cats have a blue blanket that they love to roll around on. In fact, they were helping Jen make the bed with it this morning. Well, Jen didn’t call it helping.

  4. Marg says:

That does look really warm and cozy. Can’t blame the cats for jumping right on it. We would too. Take care.

  5. Cheysuli says:

I think we have a red blanket just like that but whoever said you need a leopard print like that is right.

    • Deb says:

Ingrid mentioned that Chey!! Who am I to argue with logic!! Maybe I can find a great sale somewhere and get that leopard blanket!

  6. Wendy. S says:

Oh, I have a fluffy pink blankie, but I love “Big Red” and even better sunggling with the babies!!!

Thanks so much for stopping on by my blog and saying “hi” and I would love to read your book…Please let me know when it’s officially out and if I could send you a copy for an autograph. You and I are definitely kindred spirits and I’m so excited to read about life and kitties.

And smart step-daughter to get you “The Alchemis” : ) It’s funny that during my darkest times, I could just feel certain people I’ve met in the blogging world send me light. So, I felt yours and send it right back and that you may always listen to your heart and soul and hear the music of the Universe : )

    • Deb says:

Wendy – thank you so much for stopping by – it means a lot to me that you have done that and I just knew in my heart that you felt my message… As far as the book, it is officially available. You can go to http://www.zeezoey.com and get a copy. You will see my book trailer which I think will really touch you deeply and any books I sell through the web are sent with a custom bookmark and leopard tissue wrap sleeve. You can also request an inscription!

My best to you and I will stay in touch…

A red leopard print would be your style, but they also look so lovely on red and it does turn on the warmth-and-comfort senses for humans–since you’re experiencing your three or four days of cold. We’ll take our winters, and you can have your summers!

In our house it’s the wool granny afghan which can be a camouflage for all the black cats and even the torties since it’s multi-colored with lots of black–sometimes I can’t find them on it until they wake up and open their eyes!

    • Deb says:

I agree Bernadette – while I would love the leopard print, there is just something about the color red that is so enticing! I have a leopard blanket in the guest room – the cats love napping on it as well, and it is just like your wool granny afghan – I can barely spot them unless they are startled and move a bit!!

  8. All of the kitties look lovely against the backdrop of Big Red.!

  9. Yay Pets says:

Wow, seven kitties in one shot! That Big Red must really be something special! 🙂

  13. here’s hoping that “Big Red” makes an appearance the weekend of February 10th because that is when we will be in Florida and I absolutely HATE the heat! i am praying that Florida is in the 60s or 70s then!

    • Deb says:

I don’t think we will have a cold spell in February, Caren, but there is definately a good chance that it will be mild weather in the 70’s!!
